Recognition & Scholarships
Each year, the program highlights the significant accomplishments of Scouts who have reached the highest rank in Scouting. It also provides an opportunity for Eagle Scouts to compete for scholarships and recognition at three levels:
- Local Level: Many SAR chapters award certificates, medals, and sometimes cash prizes to Eagle Scouts within their local areas or BSA Councils.
- State Level: Each state and the District of Columbia selects a state winner, who receives a special Eagle Trophy. State winners’ applications are sent to the National Eagle Scout Committee. The Georgia state winner receives a $600 scholarship, and the runner-up gets $400.
- National Level: The National Committee judges state winner applications and selects the top three national scholarship winners.
| National Award | Scholarship |
|---|---|
| National Winner (also invited to present their essay at the National SAR Congress, held in June or July) | $8,000 |
| First Runner-Up | $4,000 |
| Second Runner-Up | $2,000 |
Eligibility
Who can apply?
The competition is open to all Eagle Scouts who are currently registered in an active unit and have not turned 19 by the end of the calendar year (December 31). There is no requirement regarding when the Eagle rank was awarded, and college plans are not necessary to apply for the scholarship.
Can you apply more than once?
Yes, you can apply each year as long as you have not reached 19 by the end of the calendar year. However, no Eagle Scout may receive more than $8,000 in total scholarships. For example, if a Scout wins the $4,000 runner-up award one year, they can apply the next year, but if they win first place, they will only receive an additional $4,000, bringing the total to $8,000.
How to Apply
To enter, complete the chapter competition application. If you win at the chapter level, your application will automatically be used for the state and national competitions. The application includes:
- Two-page application form
- Four-generation ancestor chart (with essay instructions)
- 500-word essay
Important Dates
