In 2024, the Battle of Pensacola Commemoration and Galvez Day Celebration will take place on FRIDAY, May 10th in downtown Pensacola.
While planning has just gotten underway for next year’s event, the tentative schedule of events is:
 08:00 Central- Color Guard Muster at Fort George – 501 N Palafox Street
 09:00 Central – Color Guard Parade of Colors from Fort George to the Galvez Monument
 09:00 – 10:30 Central- Galvez Day Ceremony
 3:00 Central – SAR Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Minuteman Monument in Veteran’s Memorial Park on Bayfront Parkway in Pensacola
(Note that all times are in the Central Time Zone.)
 
The registration form for both the Color Guard and the Wreath Laying ceremony can be found on the Pensacola chapters website at http://www.pensacolasar.org.
Once on the website, select the “Events and Programs” dropdown menu, and click on “Battle of Pensacola Commemoration.” The form is a .pdf form that you can fill out on your computer and then email the completed form to: [email protected].

The Pensacola Chapter of the Florida Society has joined with the Pensacola Heritage Foundation to commemorate the Battle of Pensacola and honor General Galvez’s significant contribution to the cause of American Independence.
Each year, on the date of the British surrender, the Pensacola Heritage Foundation holds a Galvez Day ceremony and the Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard opens the ceremony with a Parade of Colors that begins at Fort George, and proceeds down Palafox Street to the nearly 20 foot high monument to General Galvez that stands at the corner of Palafox and Wright Streets. The SAR is also honored to provide a musket salute to close out the ceremony.
The Battle of Pensacola Commemoration is one of three National Color Guard events that take place in the state of Florida.

As we have discussed in passing, I would very much like to get a good showing from the national color guard at this year’s National Memorial Day Parade.  PG Dodd and the incoming C.A.R. national president are both scheduled to attend.

As there are some misconceptions about the parade unit, I wanted to state clearly that the unit is the NSSAR unit — not VASSAR or GW Chapter.  I have facilitated the NSSAR unit through the GW Chapter for many years, but it has always been intended to be a national society effort.  NSSAR has always provided the certificate of insurance for the group.  Although this is not an easy one because of its location on the National Mall, there are very few parade opportunities we have with as much public exposure and media amplification.

The parade is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2024.  I am working on an earlier event that would help make this a two-fer for any color guardsmen who make the trip.  Additionally, the GW Chapter awards a chapter-level medal to participants in the parade unit.

All of that is a long way of respectfully requesting that you put this on the color guard calendar.  Perhaps you might also consider letting me make a pitch for participation at your meeting during Spring Leadership.

Wreath Laying for the Battle of Monmouth and General Friedrich von Steuben, Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Manalapan Township, NJ
This is a National SAR Color Guard Event sponsored by the Monmouth Chapter. SAR Color Guard members from multiple states can be expected. The wreath laying coincides with a weekend-long encampment by reenactors who in years past have staged several reenactments of the battle, fought on June 28, 1778. The NJSSAR Color Guard honor both the battle and General Von Steuben, the Drillmaster of Valley Forge, without whose disciplined instruction the Continental Army might have fared poorly indeed. Von Steuben’s efforts at Valley Forge are said to have first shown results on a major scale here. (Note: A Battle of Monmouth Flag Streamer is available for participating chapters.) For event details contact: Jake Rue.

Arrive by 11 a.m. to prepare for the ceremony at noon. Color Guard will present a wreath at the Von Steuben memorial. Speakers TBD.
Monmouth Chapter members should arrive by 10 a.m. to help set up and man an SAR Recruiting table next to the Visitor’s Center. It will start at 10:30 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. You are invited to participate with them.

AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR BATTLE OF Alligator Creek Bridge – The 3rd Florida invasion took place on June 30th, 1778, led by Col. Elijah Clark. It is known as the Battle of Alligator Creek Bridge. Col. Clark led his mounted Georgia Militia against British Major Prevost’s forces who were defending Alligator Creek Bridge.
As with the prior two expeditions, there was a serious leadership disagreement between the two leaders: Governor Houstoun and General William Howe. Even though there were 2,600 Continental and militia forces under the two leaders, they did not agree on how to proceed with the invasion into Florida.
General Howe (with one half of the forces) opted to stay and occupy Fort Tonyn located about 14 miles north of the Alligator Creek Battle site on the St. Mary’s River, even though it had been burned by British Loyalists.
Governor Houstoun opted to attack the 500 British Regulars, 200 South Carolina Royalists and Seminoles at Alligator Creek Bridge. As Houstoun’s forces under General Screven chased the Loyalist forces back to the bridge, the British Regulars thought Screven’s forces were also Loyalist forces retreating from the burned Fort Tonyn.
Col. Elijah Clarke led his mounted militia against the British bridge entrenchments during the skirmish and Clarke was wounded. General Screven’s main reserve force, seeing that Clarke was injured and being barely able to escape capture, ordered a retreat. This was the third failed expedition. It was primarily due to a lack of coordination that had also doomed the two previous assaults on the Florida-Georgia borderlands.
The third invasion into Florida swamp land was a disaster. Although American battle casualties were only 13, over 500 Patriots died of disease before they could be withdrawn from East Florida.

Join the Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution at Fort Watauga in honor of the Overmountain Men and their victory over loyalist forces at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The 244th anniversary of the “Gathering at Sycamore Shoals” will be celebrated with a memorial service and a ceremonial wreath laying.

September 17 is Constitution Day and Citizenship Day (Constitution Day). This day commemorates the September 17, 1787 signing of the United States Constitution.
Each educational institution that receives Federal funds for a fiscal year is required to hold an educational program about the U.S. Constitution for its students on September 17 (if it falls on a weekend; it should be held in the previous or next week).

SAR, DAR, C.A.R. and other patriotic and lineage societies & chapters are invited to participate in a formal wreath laying ceremony at the United States’ Monument.  Participants presenting a wreath must deliver it to the park’s Visitor Center no later than 9:45 am on October 7th for labeling and transportation to the monument.  Transportation will be provided for those needing assistance to the monument – Please note that parking is at the Kings Mountain State Park with shuttles transporting to the National Park.  You will need to plan PLENTY of time to arrive.
